"Melissa Schappell is a nationally exhibiting visual artist currently based in Virginia. Her mixed media artworks surrealistically fuse drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and/or assemblage to address personal and cultural issues in symbolic and satirical ways."
The works featured in this gallery are derived from my Expectations series and my newest series about chronic illness. They fulfill a desire to engage the viewer in a more physical or tactile way. These works make unspoken requests to the viewer to come closer, step around and into the artworks "personal" space, or even to touch or interject their own marks and meanings. The books allow me to invite the viewer into my artistic process and explore the notions of semiotics and metaphor together.
