"Melissa Schappell is a nationally exhibiting visual artist currently based in Virginia. Her mixed media artworks surrealistically fuse drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and/or assemblage to address personal and cultural issues in symbolic and satirical ways."
The works featured in this gallery are from my Psychology of Expectations, Environmental Factors of Mental Health, and Hidden Chronic Illnesses series. The common thread that binds them all is my deep interest in psychology and the desire to understand that which instigates or influences the development of our behaviors, opinions, and decision making. They confront expectations and perceived reality as it relates to gender roles, relationships and sexuality, politics or religion, mental health, chronic illness, and social constructs and systems.
